P11 - Waves Flashcards
What are the two types of Waves?
Transverse or Longitudinal
What is an example of a tranverse wave?
The ripples on a water surface.
What is an example of Longitudinal waves?
Sound Waves travelling through the air.
What areas do Longitudinal Waves show?
Compression and Rarefaction
What is the Amplitude?
The maximum displacement of a point on a wave away from its undisturbed position.
What is a Wavelength?
The wavelength of a wave is the distance from a point on one wave to the equivalent point on the adjacent wave.
What is the Frequency?
The frequency of a wave is the number of waves passing a point each second.
How do you calculate the Period?
Period = 1 / Frequency
What waves contain compressions and rarefactions?
Longitudinal Waves
What is the Wave speed?
The speed at which the energy is transfered (or the waves moves) through the medium.
What is the top of the wave called?
Peak
What is the bottom of the wave called?
Trough
Sound travels at approximately 1500 m/s in water.
a) How long will it take a whale song to travel 100 km?
b) If a diver hears a whale song 10 minutes after the
whale made the noise, how far away is she?
A) 100km = 100,000m 100000/1500 = 66.6s
B) 60 x 10 = 600s 600 x 1500 = 900,000m
