P2P11P12 - Static electricity + Magnetism Flashcards
What is charge measured in?
Coulombs
Why do sparks occur?
When there is a difference between the p+ and n- charge of two objects, there’s a potential difference between them.
This PD causes a rapid transfer of charge. Energy is stored in an electrostatic store and a spark is produced.
How is static electricity used in insecticide?
Insecticide is given an electrostatic charge when it is released.
The insecticide is then attracted to the earth so moves away from the sprayer.
There is a repulsion between the droplets of insecticide which means the droplets don’t clump together.
This gives an even layer of insecticide on the ground.
How is static electricity used in photocopying?
The areas to receive ink are positively charged and the ink is negatively charged, which ensures an even coat of ink in the right places.
What do charged objects create?
An invisible electric field
What happens If another electrically charged object enters an electric field?
The charged object will feel a force acting on it.
If a positive point charge exerts an electric field, which direction will the arrows point?
Away from the positive charge
What does magnetism describe?
The ability of magnets to attract and repel other magnets without touching them.
What are the 3 pure metals that can be a magnet?
Iron, nickel, cobalt
How can you tell if an object is a magnet?
It will attract magnetic materials and will repel one pole of another magnet.
What are induced magnets?
Magnetic materials that become magnets when they are in a magnetic field.
What happens if the north pole of a permanent magnet is next to a magnetic material?
A south pole will be induced in the part of the material closest to the magnet.
What do permanent magnets do?
Produce their own magnetic field.
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is the area around a magnet where another magnet or magnetic material (iron, nickel, cobalt and steel) feels a force.
Is the north pole p or n?
Positive
