P2Ch2 Energy Flashcards
What is the name of the unit used to measure energy?
Joule
Which ‘energy store’ is associated with how hot an object is?
Thermal energy store
Which ‘energy store’ is associated with energy stored in chemical bonds (eg in food, fuels, batteries)
Chemical energy store
Which ‘energy store’ is associated with the movement of an object?
Kinetic energy store
Which ‘energy store’ is associated with how high an object is?
Gravitational potential energy store
Which ‘energy store’ is associated with how stretched/ squashed an object is?
Elastic energy store
What word do we use to describe energy that has been transferred to the thermal store the environment?
Dissipated.
What is conduction?
How is energy transferred by conduction?
Energy transfer through solids.
Particles in a solid vibrate - the more they are heated, the more they vibrate
These vibrations are passed on as particles collide with the ones next to them…
What is an insulator?
A solid which is not a very good conductor
What is convection?
How is energy transferred by convection?
Convection is how energy is transferred through liquids or gases.
When particles are heated, they spread out more - the liquid/gas becomes less dense.
When particles cool, they move closer together again - the liquid/gas becomes more dense.
This process can lead to a convection current…
What is radiation?
All objects give out, or ‘emit’ radiation. The hotter an object, the more radiation it emits.
What is a fossil fuel?
Which fuels are classed as fossil fuels?
A fossil fuel is a fuel that was formed over millions of years from dead animals and plants.
Coal, oil and gas are all fossil fuels
What is a ‘non-renewable’ resources?
One that cannot be used more than once and will eventually run out. Fossil fuels are non-renewable
What is a ‘renewable’ resource?
Give some examples of renewable energy resources
One that can be reused.
Examples of where renewable resources are used to generate electricity include solar panels, wind turbines, wave turbines, hydroelectric dams
What is the unit for measuring power?
Watt
