Measures the financial performance of a company.
Types of Profitability Ratios
- Gross Profit Margin %
- Operating Profit Margin %
- Net Profit Margin %
- EBITDA Margin %
- Return on Assets
- Return on Equity
Note: whenever a ratio has a component from the balance sheet, it refers to average balance.
Gross Profit Margin Percentage
- Ratio of gross profits to sales
2. Mark-up percentage on cost or the profit percentage before deducting operating expenses.
Gross Profit Margin Percentage Formula
GP % = Gross Profit / Sales
GP % = Sales - COGS / Sales
Operating Profit Margin Percentage
- Ratio of operating income to sales.

Operating Profit Margin Percentage Formula
OP % = Operating Income / Sales
OP % = Sales - COGS - Operating Expenses / Sales
Net Profit Margin Percentage
- Ratio of net income to sales

EBITDA Profit Margin Percentage
- Ratio of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to sales.
- Measures the return of EBITDA to sales.
EBITDA Margin Percentage Formula
EBITDA % = EBITDA / Sales
Return on Assets (ROA)
- Ratio of net income to average total assets.
- Measures net income (profitability) in relation to total assets used to generate that income.
ROA = Net income / Average total assets
Return on Equity (ROE)
- Ratio of net income to average equity.
- Measures the return of net income to average equity.
ROE = Net income / Average equity
