P2 - 5.4 Resolving Vectors + Scale Drawings Flashcards
If a man is driving forwards at 4N a=with a force of 3N east how do we draw this on a graph
Pick a point and draw a narrowing facing up 4cm and an arrow pointing right 3cm so that each cm=1N
If a man is driving forwards at 4N a=with a force of 3N east based on the graph, how do we find the resultant force
Join the two vectors from tip to tail
(Move the 3cm arrow to touch the tail to the tip of the 4cm arrow)
Then draw an arrow from starting point to end (should form a triangle)
Measure with a ruler to see how long it is (as it is drawn to scale)
In this case it is 5cm -> convert into newtons using scale
5N = resultant force
If a man is driving forwards at 4N a=with a force of 3N east based on the graph with a resultant force of 5N, how do we work out the direction on the new line
Work at the angle at the starting point
In this case it is around 37 degrees (this is called a bearing)
The resultant force is 5N at a bearing of 37 degrees from north
True or False: in some cases of scale drawings forces may balance
True
What is the term used when all forces are balanced
Equilibrium
What would be the resultant force if a particle is moving at equilibrium
0N
If all arrows fit perfectly from tip to tail is it at equilibrium
Yes
When asked for the resolve vector what do you have to do
Work out the horizontal and vertical components using a scale drawing
Scenario:
A toy car is being pushed up a ramp with a force of 50N, resolve the vector
Using a scale diagram of 10N=1cm
- draw a 5cm arrow facing up/diagonally
- then draw a horizontal and vertical line to make a triangle (turn these into arrows with a direction)
- measure the sized of the lengths of the triangle
In this case it is 4cm and 3cm which can be converted into:
40N force right, 30N force up
What is a bearing
A ‘bearing’ is an angle measured clockwise from the north direction
