P2 Flashcards
What does the live wire do?
Provides the potential difference from the mains
What does the neutral wire do?
Completes the circuit
What does the Earth wire do?
Protection. Stops the appliance from becoming live carries a current if there is a fault touching the live wire can cause the current flow through your body this causes an electric shock.
What is the national grid?
The National Grid is a system of cables and transformers they transfer electrical power from the power station to where it is needed
What step up transformers?
Increase the voltage as the electricity flows through the cables
What are step down transformers?
Decrease the potential difference to make it safe
What is an LDR?
Light dependent resistor
What is a thermistor?
A temperature dependent resistor if it is hot then the resistance is less if it becomes cold then the resistance increases
What is the equation for energy transferred?
Power x time
What is the AC in the house?
Alternating current constantly changing direction UK main supply is 230 V and has a frequency of 50 Hz
What is the DC in the home?
Direct current supplied by batteries and only flows in One Direction
Particles with a higher temperature will have higher what?
Kinetic energy
