Define crude oil
A mixture of liquids that can be separated by distillation
What does fractional distillation do?
Separate complex mixtures
What does it mean if a molecule is saturated ?
It only contains single bonds eg alkanes
What does distillation separate due to?
Boiling points
What does crude oil obtain ?
Fuel and feedstocks
What is cracking?
Breaking molecules in the middle to make them smaller , uses heat and a catalyst to break long chained alkane into smaller pieces so more useful for fuels
What is a greenhouse gas ?
Methane
What is ultraviolet layer in the atmosphere ?
Radiation from the sun
What is infrared radiation?
Radiation that is trapped
Give two human activities which helped increase concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

What is a carbon footprint?
The total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over full life cycle of product
Give examples of direct emissions
Car or bus to travel to school, leaving lights in, having a bath instead of a shower
Give examples of indirect emissions
Distance and means of how far your food travels , distance food travels
What is the original source of energy for tidal power schemes?

What are biofuels?
An alternative fuel produced by plants , carbon neutral because of photosynthesis as it takes in carbon dioxide
