P1.3 Energy and work Flashcards
How do you make a stationary object move?
By applying a force to the object.
When a force moves an object, what is done on the object, and what is transferred to it?
Energy is transferred to the object and work is done on it
What is equal to the work done in moving the object?
The energy supplied to the object is equal to the work done on it.
What equation is used to calculate work done?
W = FS - Work done = force x distance moved in the direction of the force
What are all the units in the equation, what is the unit of energy aswell?
Work done (Joules, J) Force (Newtons, N) s ( Metres, m) Energy (Joules, J)
If an object doesnt move when a force is applied how much work is done on the object?
No work is done on the object
Define friction?
Friction is a force that opposes the motion of two surfaces in contact with each other
Where is work done to overcome friction mainly transferred to?
It is trasnferred to thermal energy stores by heating
