P1.2 Conservation of energy Flashcards
Define the principle of conservation?
The principle of conservation is that energy cannot be created or destroyed, this applies to all energy changes
Define a closed system?
A closed system is an object or group of objects in which no energy transfers take place out or into the energy stores of the system.
Can changes occur in a closed system, also include an example.
Yes, energy can be transferred in a closed system such as an object falling freely decreases in gravitational potential energy store and increases in kinetic energy store.
What is meant by a closed system?
An object or group of objects in which no energy transfers take place out or into the energy stores of the system
In terms of energy stores, what happens when you turn on a torch?
Energy is transferred by the chemical energy store of the battery (by the electric current in the wire between the battery and the bulb) to the thermal energy store of the surroundings (by light waves and by heating).
