P12 - Waves Flashcards
How are transverse and longitudinal waves different?
Transverse waves oscillate perpendicular to the direction of energy. Longitudinal waves oscillate parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
What kind of waves are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse
What kind of waves are sound waves?
Longitudinal
What do mechanical waves need?
A medium to travel through. They can be transverse or longitudinal.
Amplitude?
Maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its undisturbed position. (Basically from the straight line through the middle of the wave to the maximum point up or down.)
Frequency?
Number of waves a second.
Wave speed?
V=fλ
Where does refraction occur?
At a boundary between 2 different materials or densities, waves can be transmitted or absorbed.
Sound waves cannot…
Travel through a vacuum
Equation to work out speed of waves (echos)
S=2d (distance to wall and back)/t ( time delay)
To investigate waves, use…
- A ripple tank for water waves
- a spring for waves in a solid - (find one wave, note the frequency, work out speed.)
- a signal generator and a loudspeaker for sound waves.
