P12 - Waves Flashcards

1
Q

How are transverse and longitudinal waves different?

A

Transverse waves oscillate perpendicular to the direction of energy. Longitudinal waves oscillate parallel to the direction of energy transfer.

Q

Amplitude?

A

Maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its undisturbed position. (Basically from the straight line through the middle of the wave to the maximum point up or down.)

Q

To investigate waves, use…

A
  • A ripple tank for water waves
  • a spring for waves in a solid - (find one wave, note the frequency, work out speed.)
  • a signal generator and a loudspeaker for sound waves.
