P11 Magnets Flashcards
Pole
a magnet has 2 of these: 1 north 1 south
Hard magnetic
A permanent magnet that does not always lose its magnetism easily
Soft magnetic
Relatively easily to magnetize materials that lose their magnetism
Compass
Freely turning magnet on a spindle. Used for navigation as the North Pole seeks the Earth’s magnetic north
Field lines
Imaginary lines that show the direction a compass would point in that place
Solenoid
A long coil of wire
Electromagnet
A magnet that is created by a low of electric current. It can be turned on and off
Magnetic relay
A type of switch operated by an electromagnet
Fleming’s Left-hand rule
A rule used to predict the direction of the motor force
Electric motor
A machine that converts electric energy into kinetic energy
Commutator (split ring)
Fixes to the coil in a motor and rotates with it, stopping the coil getting tangled
Brushes
These brush against the commutator and allow the current to continue to flow as the coil rotates
The 3 types of magnetic metals
Iron, nickel and cobalt
Right-hand grip rule
A rule that tells you the direction of a magnetic field through a current/ wire
Fleming’s left hand rule thumb
Direction of movement
