P10- Newtons Laws Of Motion Flashcards
What is meant by inertia?
The tendency of an object to remain at a steady state
What is Newton’s first law?
The velocity of an object will only change if a resultant force is acting on it
What is the resultant force on a stationary object?
0
What is the resultant force on an object moving at a steady speed in a straight line?
0
What does an object experience if the resultant force is not 0?
Acceleration or change in velocity
What forces are balanced when an object is travelling at a constant speed?
Driving force and resistive force
What does Newton’s second law say?
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force on the object and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
What is inertial mass of an object?
How difficult it is to change an objects velocity
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to continue in its current state (at rest or in uniform motion) unless acted on by a resultant force
What is Newton’s third law?
When objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
What is stopping distance?
The distance taken to stop a vehicle
Thinking distance + braking distance
What is thinking distance?
The distance a vehicle travels during a drivers reaction time
What is stopping distance?
The distance a vehicle travels when the driver has applied the brakes
What three factors impact braking distance?
Road conditions
Speed
Condition of brakes and tyres
What happens if the force used by the brakes is very large?
The vehicle may skid or the brakes my overheat
