P10: Forces and Motion Flashcards
Link force, mass and acceleration with an equation?
Resultant force, F (N) = mass, m (kg) x acceleration, a (m/s2)
Put weight, mass and gravitational field strength into an equation?
weight, W (N) = mass, m (kg) x gravitational field strength, g (N/kg)
Put momentum, mass and velocity into an equation?
Momentum of a moving object, p (kg m/s) = mass, m (kg) x velocity, v (m/s)
How do you work out acceleration?
Final velocity - initial velocity / time taken (m/s2)
How do you work out the change of momentum?
Mass X Change of velocity. (kg m/s)
How do you work out the impact force?
(mass x change of velocity) / time taken (N)
What does stopping distance equal?
Thinking distance + braking distance (m)
How do you work out force applied to a spring?
Force applied (N) = spring constant (N/m) X extension (m)
What are the safety features of a car?
Crumple zones - increase the time taken for the car to stop
Seat belts stretch - increase the time taken for the wearer to stop
Air bags - the compressing air inside it slows you down more gradually than if you had just hit the hard dashboard
Bike helmets - increase the time taken for your head to stop in a crash
Crash mats - increase the time taken for you to stop if you fall on them
