P1 VECTORS Flashcards
Vector
A physical quantity with magnitude and direction.
Scaler
A physical quantity with magnitude
resultant
It is the single vector having the same effect as two or more vectors together.
components of a vector
The horizontal and vertical parts of a two-dimensional vector that makes an angle
θ with the x-axis.
vector resolution
To break a vector up into its components.
equilibrium
The state or condition of a system when all the forces acting on the system
produce a zero resultant.
static equilibrium
The state or condition of a system when all the forces acting on the system
produce a zero resultant and the system is at rest.
dynamic equilibrium
The state or condition of a moving system when all the forces acting on the
system produce a zero resultant and there is no change in the motion of the
system.
weight
The gravitational force the Earth exerts on any object on or near its surface.
normal force
The force or the component of a force which a surface exerts on an object with
which it is in contact, and which is perpendicular to the surface.
frictional force
The force that opposes the motion of an object and which acts parallel to the
surface.
static frictional force
The force that opposes the tendency of motion of a stationary object relative to a
surface.
kinetic frictional force
The force that opposes the motion of a moving object relative to a surface.
