P1- Schizophrenia And Its Classification Systems Flashcards
What is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder where contact with reality and insight are impaired; it usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood.
What do the classification of mental disorders depend on?
The classification of mental disorders is the process of organising the symptoms into categories depending on which cluster together in a sufferer.
What are the two major classification systems? And examples
They are two major classification systems: the ICD-11 and DSM-5, which both differ in their classification of Schizophrenia. For example, in the DSM-5, one of the positive symptoms must be present whereas in the ICD-11, two or more negative symptoms must be present for diagnosis.
