P1 Part 2 Flashcards
What are the main parts of a thermal power plant?
Furnace, Turbine, Generator, Cooling Tower.
What is definition of a renewable energy source?
One that is replaced faster than it is used up.
What is the definition of a non-renewable energy source?
One that is used up faster that it is replaced.
What are the two main gases released from a Coal Power station?
Carbon Dioxide and Sulphur Dioxide.
What environmental problem caused by Carbon Dioxide?
Global Warming.
What environmental problem caused by Sulphur Dioxide?
Acid Rain
What are the main parts of the National Grid?
Power Plant, Step-Up Transformer, High Voltage Pylons, Step-Down Transformer, Local Sub-Station.
Why is voltage stepped-up before transmission?
Reduced current and so reduced heat lost.
What is a transverse wave?
A wave where the direction of oscillation is at right angles to the direction of oscillation.
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave where the direction of oscillation is parallel angles to the direction of oscillation.
What type of wave is light?
Transverse.
What type wave is sound?
Longitudinal.
What are the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Radio Waves, Micro-Waves, Infra-Red, Visible Light, Ultra-Violet, X-Rays, Gamma Rays.
What are two similarities of electromagnetic waves?
Travel at the same speed in a vacuum (300,000,000m/s), they reflect, refract, and diffract.
What EM waves are used for communication?
Radio, Microwave, Infra Red, and Visible Light.
