P1 Part 1 Flashcards
What is infrared radiation?
Infrared radiation is an Electromagnetic Wave responsible for heat.
What is a good absorber of infrared radiation?
Matt and Black
Why do vacuum flasks have a mirrored surface?
To reflect radiation.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, & Gas
Describe the arrangement, energy and movements of the particles in a solid.
Neat rows, all touching, low energy, vibrating a bit.
Describe the arrangement, energy and movements of the particles in a liquid.
Messy, all touching, medium energy, vibrating and moving over each other.
Describe the arrangement, energy and movements of the particles in a gas.
Spread out, not touching, high energy, vibrating and moving around all over the place.
Why are metals good conductors of heat?
They have free electrons that can move through the metal passing on the heat energy quickly
Explain how a convection current is set up.
Fluid is heated, particles gain energy and move further apart. Fluid becomes less dense so rises, colder fluid is more dense so sinks towards the heat source where it gets heated up. The whole process repeats until all the fluid is the same temperature.
Name three ways to increase the rate of evaporation.
Increase surface area, increase temperature, increase air flow over surface.
Name three ways to increase the rate of heat transfer.
Increase surface area, increase temperature difference, paint black (good emitter of IR).
What is the equation for specific heat capacity?
Energy = Mass x Specific Heat Capacity x Temperature Change
What is the equation for payback time?
Payback Time = Cost/Savings
Name the 9 types of energy.
Light, Sound, Thermal, Electrical, Elastic Potential, Gravitational Potential, Chemical Potential, Nuclear Potential, Kinetic.
What is the useful energy transfer in a mobile phone?
Chemical to Light and Sound
