Q

Explain how a convection current is set up.

A

Fluid is heated, particles gain energy and move further apart. Fluid becomes less dense so rises, colder fluid is more dense so sinks towards the heat source where it gets heated up. The whole process repeats until all the fluid is the same temperature.

16
Q

What is wasted energy?

A

Energy that is transferred that is not useful to a device.

17
Q

What is the equation for efficiency?

A

Efficiency (%) = (Useful Energy Transferred/Total Energy Supplied) x 100

18
Q

What is the equation for power?

A

Power = Energy/Time

19
Q

What is a kilowatt hour?

A

The energy transferred by a device with a power rating of 1kW when it’s used for 1 hr.

20
Q

A company charges 12p/kWh. How much would it cost to run a 2kW TV for 3 hrs?

A
Energy = Power x Time
Energy = 2kW x 3h
Energy = 6kWh
Cost = Rate x Energy Usage
Cost = 12p/kWh x 6kWh
Cost =72p
