Psychologists have attempted to link SZ to childhood and adult experiences of living in a dysfunctional family. Family dysfunction refers to abnormal processes that occur within the family such as poor communication, cold parenting and high levels of expressed emotion. These all may be risk factors in the development of SZ.

Fromm-Reichmann proposed a psychodynamic explanation for schizophrenia based on accounts she heard from her patients who spoke of a particular type of parent she called the schizophrenogenic mother.

According to Fromm-Reichman, the schizophrenogenic mother is cold, rejecting, controlling and tends to create a tense family climate. This can lead to distrust, which in turn may develop into paranoid delusions and hallucinations.
