P1-Energy Flashcards
What are the different energy stores
1) thermal energy store
2) kinetic energy store
3) gravitational potential energy store
4) elastic potential energy store
5) Chemical energy store
6) magnetic energy store
7) Electrostatic energy store
8) nuclear energy store
Is the meaning of a system in physics
A fancy word for a single object or group of objects
What do you mean by when a system changes in physics
Energy is transferred
What is a closed system in physics
Where neither matter no energy can leave or enter
What is meant by net change in physics
Means total energy
What is the net change of a closed system
Always zero
How can energy be transferred
By heating or by doing work
What is the meaning of work done in physics
Energy transferred
What is specific heat capacity
Is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1°c
What is the conservation of mass principle in physics
Energy can be transferred but cannot be created or destroyed
What is meant by power in physics
Is the rate of energy transfer or the rate of doing work
Information on non-renewable energy resources
1) They will run out one day
2) They do damage to the environment
3) But they provide most of our energy
Information on renewable energy resources.
These will never run out
Most of them do damage to the environment but less nasty ways than nonrenewable
They don’t provide much energy and some of them are unreliable because they depend on whether
What are the three main fossil fuse
1) Coal
2) Oil
3) Natural gas
Name five renewable energy resources
The Sun
Wind
Geothermal
Hydro electrical
Water waves
What is geothermal power
It is possible in volcanic areas or where hot rock lies quite near the surface. The source of much of the energy is the slow decay of radioactive materials deep inside of the Earth
This is a brilliant way for free energy that is reliable and does very little damage to the environment
Geothermal power can be used to generate electricity or to heat buildings directly
The main problems with this is that there isn’t very many suitable locations and that the cost of building a power plant is often high compared to the amount of energy it produces
