P1 - Energy Flashcards
What is energy measured in
Joules
What is the law of conservation of energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed
Name 4 energy stores
Kinetic, thermal, elastic, gravitational potential
What is specific heat capacity
Energy needed to raise the temperature of a 1kg substance by 1 degrees celsius
Main points of SHC practical:
- measure mass of metal block
- place electrical heater in metal block
- measure initial temperature with thermometer
- turn on, start timer
- measure p.d (voltmeter) and current (ammeter)
- after set time, measure final temperature and calculate temperature change
Definition of power
Rate of energy transferred
Efficiency equation
Useful energy out / total energy in x100
How can you reduce thermal energy being lost (in houses, etc)
Double glazing, improved insulation overall, cavity walls
Main points of insulation practical
- Pour hot water into beaker and measure initial temperature
- Wait a set time and measure temperature change
- Repeat experiment using different types of insulation, or multiple layers of the same insulation
Examples of non renewable./finite energy sources
Coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear energy
Examples of renewable energy sources
Wind, solar, hydroelectric, tidal, biofuel, wav, geothermal
What is a system
An object/group of objects
