P&W : Spectra Flashcards
Ground State
Electrons in the lowest energy orbiut are said to be in ground state
Excited state
Electrons can gain energy to move up to higher energy levels (excited state)
Ionised
When an electron is completly removed from an electron, it is said to be ionised
Continous Spectrum
A complete range of wavelengths is created by sources such as white light when passed through a prism or grating.
Line Emmision Spectrum
Produced by electrons making transitions from excited state to to a lower energy level releasing a photon of a particular freqeuncy.
Line Absorbtion Spectrum
When photons of light passes through gas, the photons with the same energy as the energy gaps in the atoms can be absorbed.
Fraunhofer Lines
Absorption lines in the spectrum of sunlight.
They provide evidence for the composition of the suns outer atmosphere.
