Behind the counter- out of reach of customers
Under what conditions can a supply of P med be made?
- In a GPhC registered pharmacy
- Responsible pharmacist taking responsibility
- Person selling = pharmacist/ supervised by pharmacist
Which medicines are only available from a pharmacy?
- Anthelmintics- treat worms
- Parenterals- injections
- Enemas
- wound, bladder, rectum irrigation
- Aloxiprin
Can a POM be a P med?
- Yes, the same POM drug can be a P medicine- in lower strengths or lower quantities
Can P meds be the same as GSL drugs?
P drugs may be GSL drug in a higher strength or higher quantity
Give a few examples of drugs which are exempt from POM status?
budesonide, econazole, chloroquine, codeine, morphine …
Under which conditions can Budesonide be supplied a s aP medicine?
- For nasal administration
- Max dose- 200mcg/ nostril
- Treatment/ prophylaxis of allergic rhinitis
- Adults and children 12 +
Under which conditions can Econazole ( nitrate) be given as a P med?
- External
- Vaginal candidiasis
Under which conditions can Chloroquine Ph be given as a P med?
- Prophylaxis of malaria
which CD can be exempt from POM status and be a P med under ‘POM order 1997’?
Codeine, Dihydrocodeine, Ethylmorphine, Morphine, Pholcodine- & their salts and medicinal opium
Which conditions must be met to supply CD as a P med?
- must contain only one of listed substances
- Specify the max strength
- Sold in pharmaceutical form specified in Order
- In containers or packages labelled to not exceed max dose
What is a counter prescribe med?
A medicine requested by a patient to make a product extemporaneously for a condition
- pharmacist uses own judgement as to the treatment required
