A medicinal product that is not a GSL not a POM- only available from a pharmacy

Where are P medicines kept in the pharmacy?
Behind the counter- out of reach of customers
Under what conditions can a supply of P med be made?
- In a GPhC registered pharmacy
- Responsible pharmacist taking responsibility
- Person selling = pharmacist/ supervised by pharmacist
Which medicines are only available from a pharmacy?
- Anthelmintics- treat worms
- Parenterals- injections
- Enemas
- wound, bladder, rectum irrigation
- Aloxiprin
Can a POM be a P med?
- Yes, the same POM drug can be a P medicine- in lower strengths or lower quantities
Can P meds be the same as GSL drugs?
P drugs may be GSL drug in a higher strength or higher quantity
Give a few examples of drugs which are exempt from POM status?
budesonide, econazole, chloroquine, codeine, morphine …
Under which conditions can Budesonide be supplied a s aP medicine?
- For nasal administration
- Max dose- 200mcg/ nostril
- Treatment/ prophylaxis of allergic rhinitis
- Adults and children 12 +
Under which conditions can Econazole ( nitrate) be given as a P med?
- External
- Vaginal candidiasis
Under which conditions can Chloroquine Ph be given as a P med?
- Prophylaxis of malaria
which CD can be exempt from POM status and be a P med under ‘POM order 1997’?
Codeine, Dihydrocodeine, Ethylmorphine, Morphine, Pholcodine- & their salts and medicinal opium
Which conditions must be met to supply CD as a P med?
- must contain only one of listed substances
- Specify the max strength
- Sold in pharmaceutical form specified in Order
- In containers or packages labelled to not exceed max dose
What is a counter prescribe med?
A medicine requested by a patient to make a product extemporaneously for a condition
- pharmacist uses own judgement as to the treatment required
Does the patient need to be present in the pharmacy for the counter med?
YES
Can pseudoephedrine salts/ ephedrine salts or base be supplied as P med? What are they used as?
Yes
- used as a decongestant
Why the Restrictions for pseudoephedrine as P med?
Potential misuse in production of crystal meth
What are the restrictions for supplying pseudoephedrine?
- Cant supply product containing more than 72omg of pseudo OR 180mg of ephedrine without Rx at one time
- Cant supply product with pseudo & ephedrine at the same time without a Rx
- sale should be made by the pharmacist OR staff who are competent
- Even if lawful request made- can reject if suspect misuse
Can EHC be given as a P med?
Levonorgestrel 1500mcg & ulipristal acetate- 30mg can be given
What is the age restriction for Levonorgestrel? and when should it be given?
- Women aged 16 or over
- within 72 hrs of unprotected sex
When should ulipristal acetate be given?
within 120 hrs of unprotected sex
Can an advance supply of EHC be made at the request of a patient?
YES
What are the tighter controls & warnings on P meds containing codeine or dihydrocodeine? (5)
1- indications- only short term acute mod pain that is not relieved by paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin
(not given for cold flu anymore)
2- Pack sizes- if more than 32 units–> POM
3- labels –> warning- ‘can cause addiction’ & ‘for three days use only’ - prominently
4- PIL- also state can cause addiction and headache if used for 3+ days + signs of addiction
5- Sell only one pack containing codeine or dihydrocodeine
What are the restrictions on non- effervescent paracetamol as a P medicine?
- Dont supply more than 100- as only available in packs of 16 & 32- MAX is 96 tablets
Are there any restriction on how many effervescent tablets/ powders/ granules/ liquids paracetamol can be suppled as P meds?
No- but use professional judgement
Are there any restrictions to how many aspirin non effervescent tablets/ capsules can be sold?
Not more than 100- but as pack sizes are 16 & 32- 96 is MAX
Is there a limit on OTC aspirin effervescent tablets / powders?
NO- but use professional judgement
Can P meds be prescribed?
YES
Are the requirements same for P Rx as for POM Rx?
