Can a community prescriber sell/ supply POM in an emergency?
YES- under certain conditions
What conditions must apply for this supply to be made?
- prescriber is unable to provide Rx
- patient’s request
Which prescribers can request an emergency supply?
UK registered Doctors, Dentists, SP, Nurse IP, pharmacist IP- the rest are ltd
Can EEA request an emergency supply POM?
YES- except CD S1,2,3 incl phenobarbital
What conditions must apply for this supply to be made?
1) requested by appropriate prescriber
2) must be an emergency
3) prescriber agrees to provide Rx within 72 hours
4) POM is not a CD S 1,2,3 drug
Any exceptions with CD emergency supply?
Phenobarbital Na can be supplied for epilepsy
Who can request for an emergency supply of Phenobarbital Na?
- Doctor, Dentist, nurse IP, pharm IP or SP
Does a record need to be made?
YES- in the POM register on the day or the supply (or day after)
What needs to be recorded in the POM register?
2 names
2 addresses
3 dates- date of issue, date of supply, date Rx received
What Must the pharmacist interview the patient before supplying at request of patient?
1) immediate need?
2) treatment has previously been prescribed
3) dose?
Is an asthmatic person wheezing for an inhaler an emergency?
YES
Can Phenobarbital Na be supplied at request of a patient?
YES if Rx-er is from Uk
Which drugs can’t be supplied at the request of a patient?
-anything containing Bromide salts Hexobarbitone Na Methohexitone Na Thiopentone Na Strychnine HCl
How much supply to give for non CD POM?
30 days
How much phenobarbital to supply?
5 days
