octave
an eight-line stanza
ode

off rhyme
rhyming in which the words sound the same but do not rhyme perfectly.
omniscient narrator
which the teller of the tale, who often appears to speak with the voice of the author himself, assumes an omniscient (all-knowing) perspective on the story being told
onomatopoeia
language that sounds like it means.

oxymoron
a figure of speech in which contradictory ideas are combined to create a condensed paradox
paean
in classical Greek drama, a hymn of praise, usually honoring Apollo. Now, any lyric that joyously celebrates its subject.
paradox
a statement that seems self-contradictory or absurd but is, somehow, valid
parody
an imitation of a work using the original’s form or content as a model which is meant to criticize or create a humorous effect
pastoral
a poetic form invented by Roman writers that deals with the complexities of the human condition as if they exist in a world peopled by idealized rustic shepherds.
