characterization
The means of presenting and developing a character, shown through the author’s description, the character’s actions or thoughts, or other characters’ actions or thoughts.
Chorus
Originally, a group of masked dancers who chanted lyric hymns at religious festivals in ancient greece. In modern drama, it is usually a single person who comments on the action
Comedy
In drama, the representation of situations that are designed to delight and amuse and that end happily.
Conceit
A figure of speech that establishes an elaborate parallel between unlike things.
Concrete language
Language that describes particular or specific persons, places, or things.
Conflict
The struggle of a protagonist, or main character, with forces that threaten to destroy him or her. Struggle creates suspense and is usually resolved at the end of the narrative.
Connotation
The associative and suggestive meanings of a word, in contrast to its literal or denotative meaning.
Consonance
Repetition of the final consonant sounds in stressed syllables.
Couplet
A pair of rhymed lines
Dactyl
A three-syllable metrical foot consisting of an accented syllable followed by two unaccented syllables
Denotation
The literal dictionary definition of a word, without associative and suggestive meanings.
Denouement
The final revelations that occur after the main conflict is resolved; literally, the “untying” of the plot following the climax.
