What’s ozymandias about?
- A statue in the desert that is now decreipt and dilapidated but was once Ozymandias, it’s in the middle of a desert. Shows power is ephemeral and all empires fall.
Context ozymandias?
- Romantic poet and beleived in nature of power. Shelley was a pacifist and wanted to expose those who had empires.
Dramatic irony?
“Look at my works ye mighty and despair”
Mighty to despair. The use of imperative verb “despair” shows how even after death he sees himself commanding people. But irony shows he hasn’t withstood time
Semantic field?
“Wrinkled,shattered,frown,sunk,sneer”
Personifies statue and creates neg samantic field around power with the end goal showing the reader detrimental impact of lust of power.
Alliteration?
“Boundless and bare” “lone and level”
Usage of alliteration emphasises the vast and mighty extent of nature. Whereas human power eroded and chipped away by time. Everything came from earth and must return. Ozymandias power returned to desert
Sonnet?
- allows Shelley to mock ozymandias love and respect. Uses Shakespearen sonnet to show how old his ideas are and power can be evolved
