Ozone Flashcards
What is Ozone and where can it be found in the atmosphere?
A highly reactive form of oxygen that is present in the Stratosphere.
What is Ozone measured in?
Dobson units
What does Ozone do?
- Ozone has strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and some in the infra-red.
- Stratospheric ozone is responsible for the warming of the stratosphere.
- Low level ozone is harmful and encourages pollution.
What are the effects of ozone reduction?
- Cooling of the stratosphere
- Increased UVB to the lower atmosphere
- Absence of the stratospheric ozone shield would be detrimental to life on Earth.
What is the solar UV index measuring?
The daily UV radiation.
Where and when does the ‘Ozone hole’ appear?
Takes place over Antarctica in the early Southern hemisphere spring.
What combines to form ozone in the stratosphere?
Molecular oxygen and atomic oxygen.
What happens to ozone when it absorbs UV?
It disintegrates
What is a big destroyer of Ozone?
C1 derived from CFC
What causes the ‘Ozone hole’?
Catalytic chemistry with the C1
What does UNEP stand for?
United Nations Enviroment Plan
What is weather?
Daily values of:
Wind
Sunshine and cloud cover
Air temperature
Air pressure
Humidity
Precipitation
Visibility
What is climate?
The weather over decades: average and variation.
What does weather affect?
Clothing
Wind-chill, frostbite, heat stroke
Social customs
Pollution accumulation
Health and well-being
