OZ.7 Flashcards
Hydrogen bonding
What is the strongest type of intermolecular bond?
Hydrogen bonding.
Hydrogen bonding is essentially a special case of which type of dipole intermolecular bond?
Permanent dipole - permanent dipole.
What are three examples of extreme polar bonds with hydrogen in order for hydrogen bonding to occur?
- H-F
- H-O
- H-N
What lines up the hydrogen bond?
A lone pair of electrons on the oxygen, nitrogen or fluorine, lining up with a hydrogen atom.
Why is hydrogen bonding in water so strong?
The oxygen has two pairs of lone pair, and there two hydrogen atoms per oxygen therefore allow a lot attraction between O and H.
What is viscosity?
The measure of how easily a liquid flows.
How is the viscosity of liquid that contains hydrogen bonding?
High viscosity.
How is the solubility of substances that contains hydrogen bonding in water?
Substance with hydrogen bonding are often soluble in water as hydrogen bonds can be formed with water molecules to help with the dissolving process.
