OZ.1 Flashcards
Gas calculation (percentage and parts per million)
What is the first layer of the atmosphere called?
Troposphere.
What is the second layer of the atmosphere called?
Stratosphere.
Which region of the atmosphere is said to be the densest?
Troposphere, it contains 90% of the molecules in the atmosphere.
What is the trend in density of the atmosphere?
The atmosphere becomes less dense the higher you go.
What are the three main gases in unpolluted environment and what are the concentrations in percentage?
Nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), argon (1%).
What is ppm?
Parts per million. It tells us how many molecules of a gas there will be in a sample of one million particals.
How can you calculate the percentage concentration of a gas when given the concentration in ppm?
ppm / 1000000 x 100 or ppm / 10000
How can you calculate the ppm when given the percentage concentration?
% x 10000
What human activities led to increase in concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Combustion of hydrocarbon fuels, deforestation.
What human activites led to production of methane into the atmosphere?
Cattle farming, landfill sites, rice paddy fields, natural gas leakage.
What human activities led to production of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere?
Fertilised soils, changes in land use.
What human activities led to production of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere?
Incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.
What human activities led to production of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere?
Internal combustion engines at high temperatures.
