OZ 7- The Ozone Hole Flashcards
1
Q
What atoms do hydrogen bonds occur between?
A
Hydrogen and oxygen, fluorine, nitrogen
2
Q
Why do H bonds only form with certain atoms
A
Has to be a large dipole, only forms with highly electronegative atoms
3
Q
Why does there have to be a lone pair of electrons for hydrogen bonds to form?
A
So hydrogen can line up with them
4
Q
Are substances with hydrogen bonds soluble in water?
A
Yes
5
Q
Why do liquids with hydrogen bonds have high viscosity?
A
- stronger the IM forces, more difficult it is for atoms to slide over each other
6
Q
Explain how reservoir molecules contribute to the enlargement of the ozone hole.
A
- Low temperatures of Antarctic winter lead to formation of stratospheric clouds, contains small particles
- Vortex of air forms, reservoir molecules adsorb on to surface of particles, where they react
- Cl2 is released as gas, when temperatures rise Cl2 is broken down into chlorine radicals
