OZ 6- The CFC Story Flashcards
What are CFC’s?
- chlorofluorocarbons
- compounds containing chlorine, fluorine and carbon
- used in refrigerants and aerosols
What are halo alkanes (halogenoalkanes)?
When 1 H atom in alkane is replaced with halogen
Define electronegativity
An atoms ability to attract electrons in a covalent bond
What is the most electronegative atom?
Fluorine
What makes a molecule polar?
When 1 atom is more electronegative, attracts electrons in bond more strongly
Define permanent dipole
- when there is significant difference in electronegativity in 2 atoms, bond is permanently polarised
How can a molecule be non-polar but contain permanent dipoles?
-depends on distribution of electronegativity
Define instantaneous dipole
When a non-polar molecule becomes polar, because the elctrons in a bond are not evenly distributed. Happen to move closer to 1 atom
Define induced dipole
When an unpolarised molecule is next to a dipole, the partially negative end will attract the positive end and cause movement of electrons
Which is the strongest kind of intermolecular force (except H bonds)?
Permanent dipole-permanent dipole
What is the weakest type of intermolecular force?
Instantaneous dipole-induced dipole
Does branching in alkanes affect mp and bp?
Yes-more branching less points of contact for IM forces, more easily broken
What are chlorine reservoir molecules and what do they do?
- when molecules react with chlorine radicals in atmosphere, and store chlorine.
CH4 + Cl. CH3 + HCl
NO2 + ClO ClONO3
