Oxygenic Photosynthesis Flashcards
Oxygenic Photosynthesis
photosynthesis that has O2 as a waste product from tearing apart water
How did oxygenic photosynthesis evolve
2 part process:
1- development of oxidant that could remove electrons from water
2- development of enzyme that could transport electrons through the metabolic system
theory on how cynobacteria was initially formed
green and purple sulfur shared pigments into one cell, which allowed the 2-step process to occur, in both anoxic and aerobic environments
result of oxygen production
aerobic respiration - using external nutrient of O2
How many mols of O2 are needed to oxidize 1 mol of glucose
6
What microbe do respirating microbes have a syntrophic relationship with?
Cyanobacteria, because they will use the waste products of respiration to replenish the O2
