Oxygenation Terms Flashcards
Dyspnea
describes respirations that require excessive effort, such as is common in clients who smoke, suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or have been diagnosed with asthma.
Stridor
are harsh, loud, high-pitched sounds auscultated on inspiration that signal narrowing of the upper airway or presence of a foreign body in the airway.
Wheeze
is a continuous, high-pitched squeak or musical sound made as air moves through narrowed or partially obstructed airway passages.
Fremitus
vibration of the chest wall that can be palpated during the physical examination.
Common signs of Hypoxia
Anxiety, restlessness, confusion, or drowsiness. Hyperactivity is not associated with hypoxia. Other common symptoms of hypoxia are dyspnea, elevated blood pressure with small pulse pressure, increased respiratory and pulse rates, pallor, and cyanosis.
Hypoxia
Hypoxia is a condition in which an inadequate amount of oxygen is available to cells.
Perfusion
refers to the process by which oxygenated capillary blood passes through body tissues.
Atelectasis
refers to collapsed alveoli.
bronchospasm
When allergic responses take place in the lungs, breathing difficulties are far more severe. Small airways become edematous, mucus production increases, and inflammatory chemical mediators cause bronchospasm.
