Oxygenation Terminology Flashcards
True or False? Gas moves from greater pressure to lesser pressure
True
True or False? Air glows into the chest when pressure in the chest is less than the atmosphere?
True
Describe Inspiration
- Diaphragm contracts & flattens
- Rib cage elevates
- Intrapulmonary volume increases which decreases intrapulmonary pressure
- Air rushes in
Describe Expiration
- Passive
- Muscles relax
- Diaphragm rises
- Ribs descend
- Lungs recoil
- Intrapulmonary pressure increases which compresses alveoli
- Air is forces out of the lungs
Define Oxygenation
Mechanisms that facilitate or impair the body’s ability to supply oxygen to all the cells of the body
What is the function of the respiratory system?
To obtain oxygen from the atmosphere air, transport this air to alveoli & ultimately diffuse oxygen into the blood that carries oxygen to all the cells of the body.
What is Hypercarbia and what does it do?
It’s an increased level of CO2 in the blood.
Hypercarbia induces inhalation of air into the lungs through yawning or sighs.
What is the normal RR in an adult?
10-20 breaths per min
Define “Patent Airway”
An airway that is open and free of obstruction
Define “Cyanosis”
It’s a late sign of hypoxemia seen as a blue tinge to the skin of light skinned people and gray on darker skinned ppl.
Define “Hypoxemia”
A decreased level of oxygen.
Clubbed nail beds are a sign of prolonged hypoxemia.
Describe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Preventable & treatable
- Compromised airflow
- It’s a progressive dissorder
- Alters respiratory structures over time
- Inflammation of mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes
- Loss of elasticity of parenchyma
