Oxygen Transport System Flashcards
SOB, Dyspnea at rest
Block of perfusion, BIG RED FLAG!!!
OTS Coneptual Model
OTS is considered the basis for life, it is a multi-step process
Impairment may arise at any step in the process and may cause changes at any point
Disruption of the system is considered a medical emergency
Pulmonary Circulation
The volume of blood circulating through the pulmonary system is equal to the volume of blood within the peripheral circulatory system
Peripheral Circulation
Peripheral circulatroy system is the conduit to provide metabolically active tissues with oxygenated blood. Purpose: including micro circulation at the tissue level is to provide saturated O2 blood and to remove partially desaturated blood
Lymphatic Circulation
Has an essential role in regulating interstitial fluid dynamics
Steps in OTS
- Air Quality and Inspired Oxygen: bad quality affects entire system
- Airway
- Lungs and Chest Wall
- Diffusion
- Perfusion
- Myocardial Function
- Peripheral Circulation
- Tissues extraction & utilization of O2
- Return of partially de-saturated blood and CO2 to the lungs
Variables to the OTS
Oxygen Delivery (DO2) Oxygen Consumption (VO2) Oxygen Extraction Ratio (OER): how efficient the system is = delivery/consumption
What perturbs the OTS?
- Basal Metabolic Rate; BMR
- Level of Arousal
- Gravitational Stresses: VQ ratio, optimal
- Exercise and Activity
- Change in myoglobin and hemoglobin levels: content in blood
