Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
Oxygen Therapy
- aims to provide sufficient concentration of inspired O2 to permit full use of the oxygen carrying capacity of the arterial blood thus ensuring adequate cellular oxygenation given CO and Hb concentration
Use in clinical setting
- cardiac arrest
- treat hypoxaemia
- short term therapy or surgical intervention
- decreases LOC
- post surgical intervention
- major trauma
- pulmonary haemorrhage
- anaphylaxis
- major head injury
Nasal Cannula
can irritate ears and nares
1-6 O2 flow L/min
Hudson Mask
patient might find uncomfortable (ears)
- need tight seal around
6-12 O2 flow L/min
Partial Rebreather
- reservoir bag conserves O2, good fro short term therapy requiring moderate to high F1O2
8-12 O2 flow L/min
Non-rebreather
one way valve to let CO2 to leave the mask, good for short term for patient’s needing higher O2 concentrations
Venturi mask
mask is uncomfortable
useful for patients with CO2 retention
Complications of O2 therapy
- CO2 narcosis
- absorption atelectasis
- infection
- combustion (no smoking)
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
Therapy used to help a person who has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) breathe more easily during sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway doesn’t collapse when you breathe in.
