IV therapy Flashcards
Intravenous Therapy
Goal of IV fluid administration is to correct or prevent fluid and electrolyte disturbances
It allows for direct access to the vascular system, permitting the infusion of continuous fluids over a period of time
Colloids
Solution that contain protein or starch
Isotonic
Same osmolarity of another solution, in this case its blood
Hypertonic
Higher osmolarity than inside the cells, pulls fluid out of cells
Hypotonic
Lower osmotic pressure (move fluid into the cells)
VIP Score
- Visual Infusion Phlebitis Score
Assessing the insertion site for early signs of phlebitis and allows for prompt action to be taken to avoid thrombophlebitis or a line related local infection or systemic septicaemia.
Infiltration
most common cause is damage to the wall during insertion or angle of placement
Extravasation
Fluid continues to leak outside of vein
thrombophlebitis
Inflammatory process that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins, usually in your legs.
Cellulitis
- Bacterial skin infection, Inflammation of loose connective rissue around insertion site
- caused by poor insertion technique
- red swollen area spreads from insertion site outwardly in a diffuse circular pattern
- treated w/antibiotics
Septicemia
Sever infection that occurs to a system or entire body
most often caused by poor insertion technique or poor site care
discontinue device immediately, culture and treat appropriately
