Oxygen Flashcards
How to find the % of oxygen in the air - reactions with copper & phosphorus
Copper - reacts with copper and the volume decreases in the pressurised syringes and when it stops decreasing all the oxygen has been used up which is about 21%
Phosphorus - oxygen reacts with phosphorus and evaporates which causes the water level to rise to fill in the gap where oxygen was. It rises around 21% because that is roughly how much oxygen is in the air. The word equation is: oxygen + phosphorus = phosphorus oxide
Reactions of oxygen to form metal oxides and non metal oxides
Carbon - glows red + burns in orange flame, UI turns green
Iron - lots of sparks then burns in orange flame, UI turns blue
Magnesium - bright white flame, turns UI blue
Sulfur - pale blue flame, UI turns red
Sodium - yellow flame, turns UI blue
What is oxidation?
Reaction with oxygen where a substance gains some oxygen
What is combustion?
Burning in oxygen (releases heat energy)
What is the fire triangle?
Heat, fuel and oxygen
How do you put out a fire?
Using a powder fire extinguisher is suitable for almost all fires
Using a carbon dioxide one is suitable for fires involving electrical apparatus
Using a water one is suitable for burning solids but cannot be used on electrical apparatus or burning liquids e.g. oil
Products of complete and incomplete combustion
Complete - oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, (energy)
Incomplete - oxygen, carbon monoxide, water
What are the balancing symbol equations for complete and incomplete combustion?
Combustion - _________ + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water ( + heat energy )
Incomplete combustion -
What is the test for carbon dioxide and water?
Carbon dioxide - limewater turns cloudy
Water - copper sulfate turns blue
What is incomplete combustion?
Burning in a limited supply / insufficient oxygen
