Q

general properties of all Halogens

A
  1. Toxic
  2. reactive to water and behave as strong acids
  3. aid combustion as they oxidise
  4. Highly reactive, especially with alkali metals and alkaline earths
  5. have low melting points and boiling points
  6. The halogens become darker as you go down the group
  7. The halogens become less reactive as you go down the group.
  8. Halogens readily combine with hydrogen to form the hydrogen halides EG Sodium chloride

Q

Describe Fluorine F2

A
  1. pale yellow gas
2, reacts on contact with combustable substances by combusting EG even a house brick
  2. reaction to water is vigourous. it burns water
  3. bright white flame
  4. pungent
    6.corrosive
7.reacts vigourously with water combines with hydrogen to create hydrofluoric acid. burns even after neutralising with alkali
  5. toxic
  6. highly and most reactive halogen. reacts with every element except helium !!

Q

describe Chlorine

A
  • green yellow gas
  • second most reactive halogen
  • Much heavier than air. Pools. WW1 pooled in trenches
  • Toxic WW1 gas
  • reacts slowly with water and produces hydrochloric acid attacks wet mucus
  • strong odour ( bleach )
  • toxic

Q

define oxidising agent and why are Halogens included

A

An oxidizing agent is defined as “a substance that contains oxygen and gives it up readily, plus the halogens.”

The halogens are included in the general definition of an oxidizing agent because they will support combustion. It is important to note that the halogens contain no oxygen in their molecules but are still extremely efficient oxidizing agents because they will support combustion

Q

What are the Halogens

A

The group 7 elements are also known as the halogens. They include fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine, which all have seven electrons in their outer shell.
