Oxides Flashcards
Basic oxides
React with acids to form salt and water only.
They are insoluble in water (except group I).
Most metallic oxides are basic.
Amphoteric oxides
React with both acids and bases to form salt and water only.
All 3 are insoluble in water.
ZAP: Zinc oxide, Aluminium oxide, lead (II) oxide
Acidic oxides
Most non-metallic oxides are acidic.
Often exist as gases at room temperature.
Most acidic oxides dissolve in water to form an acid.
They react with alkali to form salt and water only.
Neutral oxides
HCN: H2O, CO, NO
(CO2 and NO2 are acidic)
They are insoluble in water.
They do not react with acids or bases
Is silicon dioxide an acidic oxide?
Yes, it does not dissolve in water but reacts with hot concentrated sodium hydroxide to form sodium silicate, Na2SiO3
Use of sulfur dioxide
- Bleach
- Manufacture of wood pulp for paper
- Food preservative to kill bacteria
