Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
Element
An element is a pure substance that is made of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical processes.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element having the same chemical properties of that element
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms chemically combined together
Ion
An atom or group of atoms with an electric charge
Monoatomic elements
Elements that exist as individual atoms
Diatomic molecules
Diatomic molecules are those that are formed by two atoms chemically combined together
Polyatomic molecules
Polyatomic molecules are those that are formed by three or more atoms chemically combined together
Compounds
A pure substance containing two ore more elements chemically combined together in a fixed ratio
Mixture
An impure substance containing two or more substances that are not chemically combined together
Nucleon number
Total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Proton number
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
