Oxidative phosphorylation Flashcards

1
Q

A patient has a condition in which his body produces higher concentration of cyanide than healthy individuals. How does this affect the ETC and/or ATP synthesis?

A

cyanide inhibits complex 4 (of the ETC) which prevent O2 consumption and ATP synthesis

Q

A patient has a condition in which it’s body is inhibiting oxygen uptake and subsequent ATP synthesis. What would be the best ideal solution to this proble?

A

Offer dinitrophenol or a similar molecule that can dissipate the gradient created.

Q

What would happen if one of the 3 beta subunit of F1 is inhibited?

A

then that particular subunit would not be able to catalyze ADP and Pi to form ATP.

Q

What would happen if adenine nucleotide translocase was inhibited?

A

adenine nucleotide translocase moves ADP in and ATP out of the matrix. If the activity of this enzyme was inhibited, then 1) it would affect ATP synthesis (because we wouldnt have ADP) and 2) it would prevent the translocation of ATP out of the membrane and into other tissues.

Q

What would happen if phosphate translocase was inhibited?

A

Pi would not be able to enter the matrix to be utilized for ATP synthesis thereby inhibiting ATP synthesis.
