Q

How is an oxbow lake formed?

A
  • when the neck of the lander gets narrower. The river then cuts though the neck and shortens its course leaving behind the old river which is cut off by deposition. The result is a crescent shaped lake. Overtime it will be a marsh or dry up.

Q

How are flood plains formed

A

Floopains are formed when meanders migrate across the floodplain due to lateral erosion and erode the bluff.
When the river floods it deposit its alluvium creating a flat floodplain and layers build over heard to form a thick deposit of fertile land

Q

How are levees formed?

A

When a river bursts its banks, friction with the land reduced the energy and causes deposition. Heavy sediment is deposited close to the river and progressively become smaller further away from the river channel
After every flood, the banks are built higher which leaves raised banks on the side of the river
This means the channel can carry more water and flooding is less likely.
