Overview Of The Digestive System Flashcards
Wha is included in the GI track
Large intestine, mouth, esophagus, stomach, pharynx and small intestine.
What is included in the accessory digestive organs?
Tongue, teeth, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
What are the six basic processes the digestive system performs?
Ingestion, secretion, propulsion, digestion, absorption and defecation
What is ingestion?
Taking food and liquids into mouth(eating)
What is secretion?
Releasing water, acid, and enzymes into the lumen of the GI tract
What is propulsion?
Churning and moving food through GI tract (swallowing; peristalsis)
What is digestion?
Including mechanical and chemical breakdown of food
What is absorption?
Transporting digested products from GI tract into blood and lymph
What is defecation?
Elimination of feces from GI tract
What is mechanical digestion
The teeth cut and grind food before it is swallowed and then smooth muscles of the stomach and small intestine churn the food to further assist the process
What is chemical digestion
The large carbohydrate, lipid, protein and nucleic acid molecules in food are split into smaller molecules by hydrolysis
What is churning in stomach and chewing?
Mechanical digestion
What is enzymatic breakdown of food?
Chemical digestion
What is digestion?
A process where foods must be broken down into molecules that are small enough to enter body cells
