overview of nervous system Flashcards
what does the CNS do
-integrates all the info, initiates, helps formulate response to outside stimuli
-ex: efferent neurons (motor neurons): carrying motor info out to periphery
what does the PNS do
-transmits info to/from external environment
-ex: afferent nervous (sensory) : carrying info into cell
what are the components of a neuron/nervous system
-receptor (sensory)
-afferent neuron (sensory)
-synapse onto interneuron
-efferent neuron (motor neuron)
-target organ (muscle)
what is somatic function
general motor flow to skeletal muscle
-sensory info from skin/muscles
-conscious control
what is autonomic function
motor outflow to smooth muscle (GI)
-cardiac muscle, sweat glands
-not under conscious control
describe cranial nerves characteristics
-12 bilateral pairs
-afferent and efferent neurons
-somatic function (head/neck region)
-autonomic function (pupil response, tear production, saliva production)
-special senses function
-enter/exit through brainstem through skull foramina
describe spinal nerves characteristics
-31 bilateral pairs
-afferent and efferent neurons
-somatic function (body wall/limbs region)
-autonomic function (blood vessels, sweat glands)
-no special senses
-enter/exit through the spinal cord in interforamina
