joints Flashcards
what are the 3 functions of the lower limb?
1.locomotion
2. posture/balance
3. sustain all body weight
describe the pelvic girdle
-bones that connect limbs to the trunk
-2 hip bones and sacrum
-makes a complete ring
describe the hip bone
-the left and right are identical
-includes 3 bones fused together: ilium, ischium, and pubis
describe the fibrous joint type and give an example
connective tissue between bones, non-moveable. Example: sutures in skull or your teeth
describe the cartilaginous joint type and give an example
cartilage between bones, slightly moveable.
Example: intervertebral disk between vertebra or the pubic symphysis
describe the synovial joint type and give an example
freeley moveable joints. These contain:
-uniaxial synovial joints: axis of movement (ex: elbow joint)
-biaxial synovial joints: 2 axis of movement (ex: wrist, fingers)
-multiaxial synovial joints: more than 2 axis of movement (ex: hip, shoulder, thumb)
-plane/gliding synovial joints: no axis of movement. Bones just slide by each other.
describe the hip joint
between the acetabulum and head of femur. Has a synovial multiaxial joint.
Does the following:
- flexion/extension
-abduction/adduction
-medial/lateral rotation
what does the acetabular labrum do
increases stability of hip joint
what does the ischiofemoral ligament do
known as the ‘joint capsule’, stabilizes the joint
what does the iliofemoral ligament do
limits hip extension
