What happened between 1918 and 1919?
The German revolution happened in 1918, forcing Kaiser Wilhelm II to abdicate. The Weimar republic, Germany’s first democratic government in history, was set up.
What happened between 1919 and 1923?
The Weimar republic faced years of instability and threats, especially due to the Treaty of Versailles. The Nazi party formed and developed into an extreme force from 1920-23.
What happened between 1924 and 1929?
Gustav Stresemann became the new leader. He delivered economic reconstruction and managed to internationally rehabilitate Germany.
What happened between 1929 and 1933?
In 1929, the Wall Street crash happened in the USA. Germany was heavily invested in the USA’s financial markets, and it plunged into a Depression where millions lost jobs and factories closed down.
Support for political extremists went up. One party to benefit from this was the Nazi Party, which stood for election in 1928. After 1929, the number of votes it got increased rapidly.
What happened between 1933 and 1939?
By January 1933, Hitler was Chancellor. He shut down democracy and ruled as dictator.
The German people were subjected to huge amounts of propaganda. Many were persecuted, others executed.
