What was the DAP?
A
- German Workers’ Party
- Set up in 1919 by Anton Drexler
- Ideology = nationalist socialists
- Hated the WR, ToV and Jews

How did Hitler join the DAP?
A
- Hitler was spying at a DAP meeting.
- However, he was invited to join the party after Drexler heard him debating at the meeting.
- He became Drexler’s right-hand man.

How did the DAP develop after Hitler joined?
A
- Hitler’s powerful and passionate oracy, along with hatred of the WR, meant membership grew to 3000 by 1920
- In 1920, Hitler and Drexler announced the party’s manifesto: the 25 Point Plan
- Hitler suggested the party’s name change to the Nationalist Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP or Nazis)
- They adopted the Swastika as their symbol

- building up Germany’s armed forces

What changes did Hitler make to the NSDAP when he became leader?
A
- Set up a permanent office in Munich
- Bought 2 newspapers to spread the party’s message
- Set up the SA, who paraded in the streets and beat up opposition, giving the party a sense of power and order
- Selected leaders carefully, e.g. Julius Streicher as published, or Ernst Rohn as SA leader

A
- In 1922, he persuaded members to give up the right to elect their leader
- This was the Fuhrerprinzip - he had complete power and authority
