Definition of Overtourism?
Goodwin 2017: essentially destinations where the hosts or visitors feel that their quality of life or experience is affected as a result of too many visitors.
Definition of Undertourism?
Mihalic 2017: a destination which is under-visited and receiving less tourists or not tourists for various reasons, such as no airports or bad image.
Causes of Overtourism?
Rapid Urbanisation, Cruise Tourism, Accessibility of low-cost airline sand airfares and Social media influences.
Impacts of Overtourism?
Seasonality: no pleasant spaces for visitors without tourists. Visitor Impact: congestion on roads. Physical Impact: hotels expanding, touristification. Price rises: housing availability and affordability.
Zemla 2023 conducted…
a study in two polish cities on the cost and benefits of an extreme number of visitors. The residents found that they did not find tourism that important or crucial for the destination, but couldn’t deny the importance of tourism for the economy.
Positive Impacts of Overtourism?
Positive Image, Economic boost, More events and cultures, Historical Parts of the city can be restored and protected.
Challenges of Overtourism?
Controlling the arrival of tourists without damaging the quality of life for residents. Frameworks such as Butler’s 1980 Tourism Area Life Cycle can be used to measure the development of tourism in a destination. Doxey’s 1975 Irridex Model can also be used to measure host to visitor hostility.
Milano et al. 2019 propose…
a strategy for talking overtourism. It is called the 5D’s Model. Deseasonalization, Decongestion, Decentralization, Diversification and Deluxe Tourism. The whole idea is to move tourism from the peak city areas and spread it across the country evenly.
