Definition of Demographics and Demographic Data?
Demographics refers to population information, so age, race, gender.
Demographic Data refers to socio-economic data: so income, marriage, education, birth and death rates.
Demographic Data in the UK?
Ageing Population, Birth rate decreasing, Education levels rising, Increasing multiculturalism, Migration levels rising, Wealth inequality rising.
Contemporary working patterns. Increasing in different work patterns causes work/life balances. More women in the workforce, improved productivity.
Individual challenges of the changing nature of the UK workforce?
Lack of job security, lack of permanent full-time work, financial constraints, increasing isolation, people working past retirement age and “working poor.”
Organisational challenges of the changing nature of the UK workforce?
Skills shortage, Fostering productive teams, Health issues of older workers and Many different working patterns.
Brexit’s impact?
Kelly 2020: discusses how our EU workers in hospitality demand less pay than natives and still excel with fantastic work ethic and skills. Brexit not only will leave a talent hole but greater costs for businesses as people will want to be paid more.
CGA 2021 however state that Scotland’s workfroce…
is growing! Grown by almost 89,000 jobs from 2021 to the end of 2022.
Scotland is continuing to fund the sector to increase this even more in the future.
Strategies that may work?
PAY. Progressive pay, loyalty pay, living wage as base level.
CAREER: Progression, training multi-skilled employees.
TRAINING: Train and be known to train.
